Jersey won a thrilling Island Games team badminton gold as they beat Faroe Islands 3-2 in the final.

Mariana Agathangelou and Alex Hutchings won the deciding mixed doubles 22-20 21-16 against Brynhild Carlson and Benjamin Gunnarstein at 2330 BST.

The hosts led after the men's singles, but went 2-1 down after losing the women's singles and men's doubles, before winning the women's doubles.

It is the first time since 2005 that Jersey has won team badminton gold.

"I've not seen anything like this in Jersey ever, it's been absolutely brilliant," said former England international Agathangelou.

"There's hundreds of people in this hall, I've never seen it before, and the crowd really helped," she added.

Mark Constable beat Gunnarstein 21-13 21-2 to give Jersey the lead, but Emily Temple-Redshaw lost her singles match to Rannda Karlsson 7-21 7-21.

Constable and Alex Hutchings went down 18-21 18-21 to Niclas Hojgaard Eysturoy and Aksel Poulsen to put Faroes in the driving seat.

But Agathangelou and Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow beat Carlson and Karlsson 21-12 21-16 to set up the mixed doubles decider in front of a vociferous home crowd.

"I'm so proud of the team they've worked so hard for this. Everyone's chipped in, we've all stuck together and it's been a real team effort, " Constable told BBC Sport.

"I don't think we'll ever see a crowd like we have had today, it's been a life experience and this gold medal isn't just for us, it's for the whole association and everyone in Jersey."
