George Groves defended his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles with a second-round knockout of s Paul Smith at Wembley Arena.

Groves was visibly unhappy with his first-round showing, but stormed back in round two against the Liverpudlian with a devastating series of punches.

He finished the contest clinically with a superb right hook.

"It was about using my sharp, front foot and my jab," said the 23-year-old, London-born boxer.

"I am maturing and hitting harder. These guys are getting bashed up pretty quick."

David Haye, Groves' mentor, friend and former training partner and promoter, said: "I was over the moon, ecstatic.

"He's starting to do what he does in the gym in the ring.

"Paul Smith is a durable fighter but you saw how he was despatched."
