Whiteside 'chuffed' with Euro gold

Lisa Whiteside has dedicated her victory at the European Union Amateur Championships to her father, who passed away shortly before the event.

The 27-year-old bantamweight was one of three British fighters to win gold medals at the competition in Hungary.

"It's been a tough year for me," Preston's Whiteside told BBC Sport.

"I lost my dad five weeks ago to cancer. Before he went, I said 'Dad, I'm getting you a gold medal' and that's what's driven me."

Savannah Marshall and Olympic champion Nicola Adams were Britain's other gold medal winners in the middleweight and flyweight categories.

Whiteside, who won bronze at last year's World Championships in China, knocked down Czech fighter Alice Sramkova in the first round of her bantamweight final, before seeing out the win by unanimous decision.

"I definitely got the tough side of the draw, which I'm chuffed about because it means I've earned my gold medal. I'm just so pleased," she added.
