Wales' Lauren Price has won gold at the Women's World Boxing Championships in Russia after a successful appeal.

The middleweight initially lost the final against the Netherlands' Nouchka Fontijn on a split decision.

Three judges had given the fight to Fontijn (30-27, 30-27 and 29-28), while two had Price ahead 29-28, but GB Boxing appealed and the decision was overturned.

Price, 25, is the first Welsh boxer to win World Championship gold.

The Commonwealth Games champion won bronze in the same event at last year's Championships.

"I definitely thought I did enough to win - the first round was close but I definitely thought I won the second and third rounds," Price told BBC Sport Wales.

"I need to thank my corner because they appealed when the decision was made and the judges went back and overturned the decision in the second round.

"I'm over the moon with that, you only dream of becoming world champion, but I'm Commonwealth champion, European champion and now world champion.

"I've only got one more to go and obviously that's the Olympic medal. I just feel I'm on the right path and improving all the time.

Wales' only other World Championships medallists are Kevin Evans, in 1999, and Andrew Selby, in 2011 and 2013.

"It's massive. I know Andrew Selby came close in 2001 when he won a World silver medal and being the first female boxer... I've made history," Price added.
