Tommy Fury v KSI: News conference marred by personal insults and brawls
- Published
Tommy Fury described his fight with KSI as a "circus" as their news conference descended into a shouting match.
Bottles were thrown at one stage and WWE star Logan Paul was left with a cut on his face after a brief brawl with his opponent Dillon Danis.
"It's a circus act, we've seen that all week," Fury said on Thursday.
"I think people are getting it twisted, just because he's big on social media. He's a bum in this boxing world. I'm levels above all of these guys."
Saturday's fight between Youtuber KSI and Love Island runner-up Fury, a six-round cruiserweight contest, is not sanctioned by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), but by the Professional Boxing Association (PBA).
Misfits promotional partners Wasserman Boxing are adamant the event is not pro boxing, and that they consider their KSI-led Misfits product as sports entertainment.
As a result the they have decided against coming under the governance of the BBBofC, knowing most of the fighters on the Misfits card would not meet the Board's standards for issuing pro licences. PBA provide stringent health and safety checks for each fight.
Misfits and Wasserman are also determined to sell the product as they want, controversy and all, and aligning with the Board would dilute that product, with fighters expected to adhere to a certain standard of behaviour.
"It's a completely different space to the rest of our business," Dazn CEO Joe Markowski said.
With a cage in the middle of the stage meant to separate the fighters as they face off, an hour-long news conference began with Danis and Paul arguing.
Danis insulted Paul's fiance and Paul accused him of "predatory" behaviour towards her. The co-main event segment dissolved into relentless personal insults on topics ranging from clothes to relationships, and eventually a brawl ensued.
Paul was left with blood coming from his face as security rushed in to separate the two men. As a result, the cage face-off was abandoned as Fury and KSI appeared early for their slot.
Fury has cast himself as the genuine boxer on hand to bring down crossover boxing's biggest stars.
"I'm coming to make a statement and this will be over in three rounds," Fury said.
KSI was dressed in a bright green suit and insulted Fury's dad John Fury in his opening statement.
KSI spat gum at John at the open work-outs on Wednesday after having a bottle thrown at him and John heckled and threatened KSI from the side of the stage.
As the shouting match grew, KSI hurled some homophobic taunts at John, suggesting he was hitting on him.
Security stopped John from getting into the centre of the stage and open water bottles were thrown from somewhere on the side of the stage.
When calm was eventually somewhat restored, Fury and KSI returned to arguing, with the latter saying his rival didn't "respect" him or his boxing skills.
The Britons then got in the cage, in use for the first time, and both decided to take their tops off.
More insults flew inside the cage before heavyweight Derek Chisora had to be pulled away from an argument with security.
The bizarre news conference ended with John Fury punching and headbutting the plastic partition between his son and KSI.
