Glasgow 2014: 200m champion Cydonie Mothersill to miss Games

Commonwealth Games 200m champion Cydonie Mothersill will not defend her title in Glasgow this summer after giving birth to her daughter last year.

The Cayman Islander, 36, follows in the footsteps of Scotland's Lee McConnell, who recently retired after giving birth to her first child.

Natasha Mayers, the 100m gold medallist in 2010, is also likely to miss the Games because of a lack of funding.

Mothersill also won 200m bronze at the 2001 World Championships.

Her Commonwealth success in Delhi is the only time a Cayman Islander has won gold at the Games. McConnell came fifth in the event.

Mothersill told BBC Scotland: "I have never been the type of competitor to go to any competition because I could. I want to be in the finals, I want to be on the podium.

"I want to represent my country to the best of my abilities and there will be no way I can do that for these Commonwealth Games."

Mothersill had the honour of being a baton bearer as the Queen's Baton Relay passed through the Caymans earlier this week.

The relay is the main warm-up for the Commonwealth Games, which will begin in July.

Jessica Ennis-Hill, a gold medallist for Great Britain in the heptathlon in the London Olympics two years ago, will also miss the Commonwealth Games after she announced her pregnancy in January.
