Ben Proud using Glasgow 2014 at Rio 2016 springboard

British record-holder Ben Proud will use this summer's Commonwealth Games as a springboard for the 2016 Olympics.

The 19-year-old, who trains in Plymouth under England coach Jon Rudd, is the fastest-ever Briton over 50m at both butterfly and freestyle.

He will compete in both those events, as well as the 100m freestyle and 4x100m relay in Glasgow this summer.

"Realistically the aim is to get onto the team for the Olympics," England's Proud told BBC South West.

With the 50m butterfly not being an Olympic sport he is putting all of his focus on freestyle, having broken Mark Foster's 10-year 50m freestyle record last year.

"I have to be doing 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle so that's generally what I'm training towards. But if my fly improves along with it that'll be a bonus," he said.

Proud puts his rapid rise up swimming's ranks down to working with Rudd at the Plymouth Leander swimming club.

Rudd has already guided Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte to Olympic gold and Proud is one of five Plymouth Leander swimmers from five different countries to be racing at Glasgow 2014.

"In the last three years, ever since I came to Plymouth, it's just excelled and I've got Jon Rudd to thank.

"My times are dropping and training's going well.

"The times I'm doing now I'm at my peak, so depending on how the summer goes it should be a good summer.

"The record now is my personal best so I just want to be hitting personal bests as often as I can.

"Hopefully this summer I'll bring in another record."
