Glasgow 2014: Scotland's Eilidh Child wins hurdles silver

Scotland's Eilidh Child responded to an emotional Hampden Park to win silver in the women's 400m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games.

Child, the 'poster girl' of the Games, clocked 55.02 seconds to finish behind Kaliese Spencer with Jamaican team-mate Janieve Russell in third.

"I put on a good performance," said Child, who also won silver in 2010.

"It was not enough for gold, but I will cherish my silver medal. That's one of my best moments ever."

Child, 27, was roared around the Glasgow track by a passionate home crowd but could not quite close the gap on Spencer, who clocked 54.10 seconds.

"I stepped off that track knowing I had given it everything," added the Perth athlete, who was captain of Scotland's athletic team and one of the host country's best hopes for a track medal.

"The first emotion is relief. It's been a nervous couple of days and I wanted to execute the race well.

"I knew if I executed my race right, I could come away with a medal. I didn't know which colour.

"I knew I would have to be on my 'A' game to beat Kaliese and she ran faster than my best there so I think the right lady won, but I'm just so happy with how I ran."
