CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

BBC Essex's Dick Davies:

"David Masters returned his second five-wicket haul of the season. And, although his analysis is less impressive, Chris Wright also bowled with commendable spirit and aggression to return fine figures of 2-57 in 22 overs.

"Tim Phillips, Essex's in-form bowler, only had seven overs but, even in that short spell, continued to pose problems.

"Essex openers Alastair Cook and Jaik Mickleburgh then batted with resolve to see their side to overnight safety."
