Farveez Maharoof and Gary Keedy each took four wickets to put Lancashire in charge of Yorkshire on day one of the Roses match at Aigburth.

Joe Sayers made 53, but when he was removed by James Anderson it began a collapse that saw the Tykes lose their last seven wickets for 46 runs.

Andrew Gale (31) and Adil Rashid (14) were the only other visiting batsmen to reach double figures.

Paul Horton was unbeaten on 39 as Lancashire closed on 56-1, 85 behind.

Lancashire, a point behind Championship leaders Nottinghamshire at the start of the match but with a game in hand, won the toss and asked Yorkshire to bat in helpful bowling conditions.

After rain delayed play by 45 minutes, Adam Lyth was trapped lbw by home skipper Glen Chapple and Joe Root fell the same way to Maharoof before Sayers and Gale shared 65 for the third wicket.

But a diving Steven Croft held a stunning one-handed catch at backward point to account for Sayers and begin the Yorkshire slide.

From there left-arm spinner Keedy, who played one game for Yorkshire in 1994, and Sri Lankan all-rounder Maharoof ran through the Tykes middle and lower order.

The Yorkshire collapse included wicketkeeper Simon Guy, who has come out of retirement because of the unavailability of both Gerard Brophy and Jonny Bairstow.

Lancashire lost Stephen Moore lbw to Steve Patterson in the fourth over of their reply, but Horton and Karl Brown marshalled them to the close.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

BBC Radio Lancashire's Liam Bradford:

"A great day for Lancashire that came through good discipline and consistency.

"Brilliant fielding backed up the bowlers, whose consistently good line and length forced the Yorkshire batsmen into mistakes.

"Karl Brown and Paul Horton pushed the hosts on in this Roses match and a score of 300 or more could win this game."
