Sri Lanka's Randiv takes hat-trick against Essex

Randiv came to Sri Lanka's rescue with the dismissal of Ryan ten Doeschate

Sri Lanka off-spinner Suraj Randiv took a hat-trick on day two of the tourists' warm-up match for the final Test against England on Thursday.

Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate's highest score for Essex, a superb 164 from 174 balls, helped the home side to 351 all out in reply to 337-9 declared.

Randiv bowled Ten Doeschate and 15 balls later had secured his hat-trick to boost his hopes of a Test recall.

Essex captain Ravi Bopara disappointed with the bat, making just five.

The hosts were in serious trouble at 24-3 when Ten Doeschate arrived at the crease.

But he and 21-year-old Tom Westley revived them with a partnership of 195 in 43 overs, which was finally broken when Westley was caught behind off paceman Dilhara Fernando just one short of his century - in an innings that included 17 boundaries.

Following Westley's dismissal, Ten Doeschate continued to dominate until he was bowled around his legs by Randiv.

Randiv, who did not play in either of the first two Tests, landed his hat-trick by bowling Maurice Chambers and then removing Reece Topley and Tom Craddock lbw to finish with 4-76, those wickets arriving in the space of 16 deliveries at a cost of five runs.

Though England hopeful Bopara was the pick of the home bowlers with 2-39 on day one, he had less joy with the bat on day two.

A wild swish against fast bowler Farveez Maharoof ended up in the hands of Kumar Sangakkara at second slip, meaning Bopara has now failed to reach double figures in his last four innings - and failed to top 30 in his last six.

But 17-year-old Topley provided further evidence of his rich promise with the ball, taking four wickets for six runs in 6.4 overs as the tourists earlier subsided from an overnight 324-4.

The left-arm fast bowler wrapped up the innings with his ability to swing the ball, one delivery of which accounted for Sangakkara - who was caught behind for a 153 that included 23 fours and a six.

The youngster was soon adding to his list of victims when the tourists went in for a second time, dismissing Lahiru Thirimanne - a century maker in the first innings - caught behind for six.

Left-hander Thirimanne, who looks set to replace injured captain Tillakaratne Dilshan at the Rose Bowl, had boosted his prospects of a Test debut after retired hurt on 104 on day one.

Sangakkara also appears to have played himself back into form with his imperious knock.
