England v Sri Lanka - photos from third Test day two

The second day of Test cricket to be held at the the Rose Bowl is not too dissimilar to the first as rain gently gathers on the extensive covers

Empty seats are more common than spectators at the Rose Bowl. Those who are brave enough to take their place in the ground are forced to take shelter from the rain as the 1100 scheduled start time ticks past

Umpires Rod Tucker and Aleem Dar inspect the surface - but not without the protection of a rather large umbrella as play is delayed for over two hours

Sri Lanka batsman Thilan Samaraweera may have wished proceedings had been delayed for longer when the players finally take the field at 1310 BST, taking a nasty blow on the finger from the impressive Chris Tremlett

Samaraweera does not have to wait much longer to return to the pavilion as an aimless waft outside off stump is taken by Kevin Pietersen at gully, putting Tremlett on the way to his second Test match five-wicket haul

Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, who made a century in the first Test in Cardiff, provides some resistance to the England attack with some stylish shots all around the wicket

James Anderson appeals unsuccessfully for lbw against Jayawardene. Replays show that the ball would have clipped the top of leg stump but, after a review, umpire Rod Tucker's decision stands

But Jayawardene's good work is undone in Graeme Swann's first over as he holes out to Eoin Morgan in the deep on the leg side to give the off-spinner yet another wicket in the first over of a spell

Soon after, Tremlett returns to have Suranga Lakmal caught behind off a snorter to record his best Test match bowling figures in his ninth five-day match for his country

But the bad weather makes an unwelcome return, forcing the players off after only 23.3 overs in the day. Tremlett leads England off after tearing through the Sri Lanka batting line-up with figures of 6-42
