Claude Henderson took 4-43 to help bowl Essex out for 144 as Leicestershire dominated the opening day at Southend.

The left-arm spinner ripped out the middle order as Essex collapsed after looking well placed at 78-2 with Owais Shah (24) and Ravi Bopara (37) set.

But they proved to be their county's highest scorers as only four other men made double figures.

Maurice Chambers struck twice to reduce Leicestershire from 54-0 to 60-2, but they closed in control on 100-3.

It all added up to a rewarding day for James Taylor, who is captaining Leicestershire for the first time in a championship match in place of the injured Matthew Hoggard.

Henderson also helped justify Taylor's decision to put Essex into bat by removing Shah, Jaik Mickleburgh and Ryan ten Doeschate in a 19-ball spell costing only two runs.
