Sri Lanka bowler Chaminda Vaas signs Northants extension

Northants bowler Chaminda Vaas has signed a one-year contract to remain at the County Ground for the 2012 season.

The former Sri Lanka star, 37, joined the club in May 2010, external and has taken 65 Championship wickets this season.

Vaas said: "I'm looking forward to another season with Northants. I feel I've done really well and I can't wait for another brilliant season next year.

"From the outset we had a clear plan to get promotion, and so far the team has played brilliantly."

He added: "All the lads are confident and I'm looking forward to helping the team get promoted to Division One of the County Championship."

Vaas, who retired from international cricket with 355 Test wickets in July 2009, external, has helped Northants to the top of the Division Two table.

Northants head coach David Capel said: "He has done a great job for us this year.

"It's fantastic that he wants to be with us and continue the excellent relationship we have with him."
