The home side took seven bonus points from the first innings and now know that victory over Derbyshire will secure promotion.

Derbyshire stumbled to 177-7 in reply, still 291 runs behind, with Tim Linley taking 3-34.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

BBC London 94.9s Mark Church:

"Surrey's promotion push is still on course but they are being made to work very hard by Derbyshire.

"Surrey were all out in the morning session for 468 and Derbyshire's reply was in tatters at 28-4 after lunch with Tim Linley doing the damage.

"But a stubborn partnership of 90 between Paul Borrington and Luke Sutton for the sixth wicket held Surrey up in the afternoon session.

"Chris Jordan then removed Sutton and Pragyan Ojha dismissed Jonathan Clare just before the close."
