New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel rejoins Warwickshire

New Zealand international spinner Jeetan Patel has signed a one-year contract to return to Warwickshire.

The 31-year old has spent two short but successful periods at Edgbaston including a three-match spell this year that produced 17 Championship wickets.

"It's fantastic to have Jeetan returning to the club for the full 2012 season," said director of cricket Ashley Giles.

"He is the perfect addition to complement this talented squad."

Patel is a veteran of nine Tests and 39 one-day internationals for the Black Caps, and he will become the Bears' main spin option following the retirement through injury of Ant Botha.

"It was a big blow to the team when we lost Ant last season," noted Giles. "But signing Jeetan is a great boost for everyone and we look forward to welcoming him back to Edgbaston."

Patel's first spell at Warwickshire in 2009 was notable for his maiden first-class century, scoring 120 against Yorkshire, a record for a Bears' number 10 batsman.

"Warwickshire is a great club and I've enjoyed my cricket tremendously in the two spells I've had at Edgbaston," said the Wellington-born off-break bowler.

"The new pavilion has created a fantastic stadium to be based at, and we've got a very good squad which is capable of challenging for honours.

"Finishing as runner-up in last year's County Championship was a great achievement and I'm looking forward to doing all that I can to make it another good season."

The presence of Patel in the squad allows young spinners Chris Metters and Paul Best to continue their development with less pressure than when they were exposed to Championship cricket this summer.
