Former Glamorgan batsman Michael Powell joins Kent

Kent have signed former Glamorgan batsman Michael Powell.

The 34-year-old, who played 15 seasons for Glamorgan before being released at the end of the season, has signed a two-year contract.

Powell is Kent's second signing, since the end of a difficult 2011 season, following seamer Charlie Shreck's arrival from Nottinghamshire.

"It's the right move at this time of my career. It didn't take much to convince me," Powell told BBC Radio Kent.

"There are some very good players who I highly respect."

Powell's signing follows the departures of batsmen Joe Denly, to Middlesex, and Martin van Jaarsveld, who has retired from county cricket.

"They are very good players and I don't see it that I am replacing them," he added. "I'm an addition to the squad. If I'm honest I should have done this years ago."

Powell scored more than 11,000 first-class runs for Glamorgan, including 25 first-class centuries. His highest score of 299 was against Essex in 2006.

Kent's chairman of cricket Graham Johnson added: "He has had a very succesful career with Glamorgan and still has much to offer county cricket."
