Close, day one: Middlesex 118-4 v Somerset |
Somerset 1pt |
Joe Denly marked his Middlesex debut by leading his new county's resistance against the pace of Somerset's South African fast bowler Vernon Philander.
Philander, who has taken 51 wickets in his first seven Tests, had Sam Robson caught behind with his third ball.
He also picked up the wickets of Dawid Malan and Neil Dexter, finishing with 3-21 from 12 impressive overs.
But Denly (64no) led the resistance as Middlesex closed on 118-4 off the 36 overs that were possible at Taunton.

BBC London 94.9 commentator Kevin Hands said:
"Somerset will be the happier of the two teams having collected four wickets in the 36 overs that were possible.
"It could have been much worse for Middlesex but for an outstanding performance from opener Joe Denly kept the hosts' bowlers at bay. Chris Rogers looked to be playing a similar role until a rash shot when he appeared set.
"Vernon Philander was menacing with the ball, while Steve Kirby bowled without luck in a formidable performance from the partnership.
"A couple of quick wickets in the morning will leave Middlesex scrambling to make 200, which will be below par against Somerset's renowned batting line-up."
