Opening batsman Billy Godleman hit 130 as Essex made a bright start to their first County Championship match of the season against Gloucestershire.
Adam Wheater chipped in with a rapid 56 off of 42 balls before falling to the second delivery after lunch, while Essex captain James Foster scored 46.
But they lost four wickets for seven runs as they were all out for 364 to miss out on a final batting point.
Ian Saxelby and James Fuller both took three wickets each for the visitors.
