Surrey dismiss defiant Luke Wells for victory over Sussex

Newly promoted Surrey made a winning start to life in Division One of the County Championship despite a defiant hundred from Sussex's Luke Wells.

Wells batted for nearly six hours but fell for 108 as Surrey sealed a first top-flight win since 2007 by 86 runs after 43 minutes on the final day.

James Anyon went in the fifth over when he drove outside off stump at Jon Lewis and was caught at slip.

Wells was eventually caught and bowled when his drive sat up for Lewis.

"Ultimately a comfortable win for Surrey which confirms they will be genuine contenders for the County Championship this season, but credit Sussex who fought hard throughout, but didn't make the most of their opportunities.

"The Surrey bowling attack looks particularly strong, with new signing Jon Lewis providing the experience to supplement the speed of Dernbach, Meaker and Jordan.

"Sussex will be disappointed, they bowled well enough with Amjad Khan and James Anyon both taking five-wicket hauls, but the batting was disappointing with the senior players Yardy, Joyce and Goodwin only scoring 46 runs between them in the match.

"However Joe Gatting with 72 not out in the first innings, and particularly Luke Wells with a magnificent 108 in the second innings showed that the younger Sussex players have what it takes to compete at this level, and that augers well for the rest of season."
