Warwickshire, with seven first-innings wickets remaining, trail Somerset by 36 runs after Chris Wright excelled with the ball.
Wright (4-47) took three of the first four wickets to fall as Somerset slumped to 41-4 and 95-8 before posting 147 all out, Vernon Philander with 38.
Both Keith Barker and Rikki Clarke took two wickets for Warwickshire.
The hosts closed on 111-3 in reply with Varun Chopra 40 not out and Darren Maddy unbeaten on 24.
