Kent's Matt Coles torments a dormant Yorkshire on day one

Matt Coles and the other Kent seamers frustrated a cautious Yorkshire on day one at Canterbury.

Coles took four wickets, including opener Joe Sayers and Jonny Bairstow, as the Tykes were bowled out for just 247, made from 92.3 overs.

Gary Ballance top scored with 38 from 105 deliveries, while Tim Bresnan made 33 in his seasonal county debut before falling lbw to James Tredwell.

Kent's openers faced just one over before the end of play, reaching 4-0.

"It was no surprise when Kent put Yorkshire into bat with conditions moist, blustery and gloomy early on at the Saint Lawrence Ground. The bowling was disciplined, and with help in the air and off the pitch they took regular wickets throughout the day.

"Another fine performance from Matt Coles, but all of the Kent attack played their part. They may just feel they could have bowled out Yorkshire more cheaply, but equally the visitors will ponder why so many of their batsmen made double figures, but none made fifty.

"Tim Bresnan looked in good touch with the bat, and but for a drop at slip, would have picked up the valuable wicket of Scott Newman with the penultimate ball of the day.

"Kent just on top, but Yorkshire's potent attack will think they've got a decent chance of bowling them to a first innings lead."
