Paceman Jack Brooks celebrated his England Lions call-up with four wickets as Northants made a flying start against Essex at Chelmsford.
After a first day washout, the teams had to wait until almost 5.00pm to finally get the game under way.
Essex soon lost Alviro Petersen to Chaminda Vaas, and Brooks, named in the squad to play West Indies next month, then claimed 4-22 in nine overs.
Ravi Bopara was among his victims for six as Essex ended play on 54-6.
