County Championship Division One, Old Trafford, day two (close):

Nottinghamshire 169 & 122-2 v Lancashire 146

Lancs 3pts, Notts 3pts

Career-best figures by Andre Adams and three wickets for Graeme Swann gave Notts the edge against Lancashire.

The reigning champions were set for a first-innings lead but lost their last six wickets for 16 runs as they were all out for 146, Adams taking 7-32.

Swann (3-26) dismissed England team-mate Jimmy Anderson first ball, who then did not field due to illness, but Stuart Broad finished wicketless.

Notts closed 145 runs ahead on 122-2, with Michael Lumb unbeaten on 40.

It was a difficult day for England's two premier bowlers as Broad, playing in his first game since a calf injury, went at more than four runs an over, conceding 60 runs.

Anderson, who suffered bruising to his thumb on Wednesday, managed only one over in Nottinghamshire's second innings before leaving the field due to illness.

He briefly re-emerged to field for one over but returned to the dressing room after a conversation with the umpires - presumably about what he needed to do to be able to bowl again in the morning.

Lancashire begin the second day on 48-1 but lost Karl Brown to Adams' third delivery and the former New Zealand international also got rid of Stephen Moore (43).

Ashwell Prince hit Broad for back-to-back boundaries but turned Swann's second ball to short-leg to be dismissed for 23.

Lancashire went to lunch on 129-4, just 40 runs behind Notts and in a promising position, but Adams had other ideas.

He took two wickets in two balls in the second over after the re-start before Tom Smith, batting with a runner because of a hamstring complaint, survived the hat-trick ball.

The Notts all-rounder was not to be denied for long, however, and Smith fell for an 11-ball duck before Neil Edwards took a catch remove Glen Chapple.

Swann then wrapped up the innings getting rid of Luke Procter and Anderson in successive balls, giving his side a 23-run lead.

Chapple soon got rid of Alex Hales for five as Notts began their second innings but with Anderson and Smith both unavailable, Lancashire were severely stretched in the bowling department.

Edwards and Michael Lumb put on a slow-but-steady stand of 79 before the former fell lbw for 40 to Simon Kerrigan.

VIEWS FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX

BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read:

"Sometimes things conspire against you that you can do nothing about, other times the opposition produce some magical moments. For Lancashire on day two a little bit of both happened.

"Andre Adams happened first, ripping through the Red Rose batting line up taking seven wickets, six fell in a sensational spell after lunch. A 50-minute period which has transformed the game.

"Combine that with a bit of bad luck, an injury to Tom Smith and illness for James Anderson, deprived Lancashire of two vital bowlers. And how Notts made them pay."

BBC Radio Nottingham's Dave Bracegirdle:

"Professional sport is full of twists and turns but rarely have I witnessed such a dramatic about-turn in a side's fortunes.

"Lancashire were blown away by the mercurial Andre Adams, who at 36, is getting better and better.

"For the first time in his career he collected a seven-wicket haul, with good support from Graeme Swann.

"There will undoubtedly be more twists and turns to come, but Notts are in a commanding position at the end of day two."
