Sussex batsman Ed Joyce has backed his team-mate Murray Goodwin to return to top form soon.

Goodwin, 39, has scored more than 21,000 first-class runs in his career but has struggled so far this season.

He has only registered 39 runs in seven County Championship innings and was dismissed for one and seven during Sussex's match against Worcestershire.

"Lots of batsmen are struggling to get any runs, including people like Mark Ramprakash," Joyce told BBC Sussex.

"There aren't many people averaging more than 40 apart from (Somerset's) Nick Compton.

"It's been hard work, the pitches have done a lot and there are a lot of quality bowlers in the first division.

"But Murray has shown he is one of the best batsmen in the county game. He only needs that bit of luck to get over 20 and I'm sure he will make someone pay soon."
