Close, day one: Sussex 305-9 v Nottinghamshire |
Sussex 3pts, Nottinghamshire 3pts |
Chris Nash hit his first century of the season as Sussex built a decent total on day one against Nottinghamshire.
Nash, who scored 84 and 98 last week against Worcestershire, made 128 as Sussex ended the first day on 305-9.
Luke Wright also added 81 in his first County Championship innings of the season after returning from a spell playing in the Indian Premier League.
Samit Patel (3-66) was the pick of the Nottinghamshire bowlers, dismissing Joe Gatting, Wright and Ben Brown.
Ed Joyce scored 108 not out last week against Worcestershire but was the first man to be dismissed when he was caught at gully by Riki Wessels off the bowling of Ben Phillips.
Murray Goodwin's poor run of form continued as he was dismissed for one.
The Zimbabwean, who has scored more than 21,000 first-class runs in his career, has only registered 39 runs in eight championship innings so far this season.
Sussex were on 97-4 but Nash and Wright added 145 for the fifth wicket before three wickets fell for 15 runs.
Naved Arif will resume on Saturday morning on 24, while Steve Magoffin scored 19 before being caught.
VIEWS FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX
BBC Sussex's Adrian Harms:
"Sussex will perhaps be slightly disappointed at the end of day one, having won the toss on a good pitch and in excellent batting conditions, they failed to fully press home that advantage.
"Having been 79-1 and then 242-4, a total of around 400 looked attainable, that being said at 97-4 they would have settled for 305-9 at close of play.
"We will find out tomorrow just how good a batting surface this is, but Chris Read will be marginally the happier of the two skippers tonight.
"Chris Nash batted beautifully for his 128, and, with his ability to bowl off spin, he could be attracting the eye of the England selectors particularly in the one-day game.
"Murray Goodwin will be less pleased as he made just one, which makes a total of 39 runs in eight Championship innings this summer."
