Promotion-chasing Derbyshire edged the honours on a rain-hit opening day against Kent, despite the visitors battling back late on.
In the 70 overs possible in an extended day at Derby, Kent reached 238-8 against their County Championship Division Two rivals.
Opener Sam Northeast made 52, while Matt Coles is still there on 51.
Derbyshire paceman Tim Groenewald took 3-41, while Mark Turner and Tony Palladino both claimed two wickets.
