Northants-Derbyshire: Newton ton puts outsiders on top

Rob Newton led the way with a century as Northants made promotion-chasing Division Two leaders Derbyshire struggle on day one at Wantage Road.

Newton hit 115, backed by key contributions from James Middlebrook (50no) and Niall O'Brien (42).

With Northants on 147-4, it looked like Derbyshire were starting to get on top.

But, despite two wickets each for paceman Tony Palladino and spinner David Wainwright, the promotion outsiders ended the day in control.

With just three matches left, Northants started this game 29 points adrift of second-placed Yorkshire - and 40 behind Derbyshire,

But, if they were to win at least two of those three matches, they could still mount a challenge.
