Strauss supports 'contrite' Pietersen

Former Test captain Andrew Strauss says Kevin Pietersen can make a successful return for England.

Pietersen was dropped in August for sending "provocative" texts about Strauss to South Africa players.

But the batsman, 32, has apologised and has been recalled for the tour to India - a decision that Strauss backs.

"Kevin sounds like he's contrite and he realises he's made some mistakes and now is the time for everyone to look forward," Strauss told BBC Sport.

"Now isn't the time to question whether it was the right decision or not. It's time for everyone to make it the right decision.

"An England side with him in it that is harmonious and all working in the same direction is the best-case scenario and everyone needs to make sure that's what actually happens."

The decision to recall Pietersen was made after he met with coach Andy Flower, Test captain Alastair Cook and other senior players.

The South African-born player also had to apologise to Strauss and was told he would need to complete a period of "reintegration" before being allowed to play for England again.

Strauss, who retired from professional cricket at the end of August, says a tour to India is one of the toughest assignments in world cricket.

"If they do win, it will be one of English cricket's greatest moments," said the former opening batsman, 35. "If you look at India's record at home it's better than any other country in the world."

England play four Tests against India, with the first starting in Ahmedabad on 15 November. Others follow in Mumbai, Kolkata and Nagpur.
