Close, day one: Leicestershire 250, Gloucestershire 31-2

Leics 2pts, Glos 3pts

Benny Howell's maiden five-wicket haul for Gloucestershire halted Leicestershire's progress on day one.

The home side slumped to 52-5 with opener Michael Thornely out for a second-ball duck to Will Gidman (3-65).

Howell took 5-57 but Shiv Thakor (75), who scored a ton in last week's draw with Kent, and Matthew Boyce (55) helped push the hosts to 250 all out.

Gloucestershire closed 219 runs behind on 31-2 with Ollie Freckingham and Robbie Williams taking a wicket each.

BBC Radio Bristol's Bob Hunt:

"Gloucestershire will be disappointed not to finish off Leicestershire earlier having got them at 55 for 5.

"The afternoon session saw them bowl with less accuracy, but they came back strongly after tea with Benny Howell getting five wickets for the first time.

"The first hour on the second day will be crucial."
