Jacques Kallis: South Africa star to miss Champions Trophy

South Africa will be without all-rounder Jacques Kallis for next month's ICC Champions Trophy after he asked to miss it for "personal reasons".

The 37-year-old has been a Proteas mainstay in all forms of the game for nearly two decades, having made his one-day international debut in 1996.

He has played in 321 ODIs, scoring 15,756 runs and taking 270 wickets.

Head selector Andrew Hudson said it is "a little too early to speculate" if Kallis's ODI career is over.

The right-handed batsman and right-arm seamer, recently named as one of Wisden's cricketers of the year, is the fifth highest run scorer in ODI history.

He is currently playing in the Indian Premier League and has often spoken of his desire to feature at the 2015 World Cup.

Hudson admitted Kallis's experience would "obviously be missed" but added "it does create an opportunity for David Miller, whose recent form has been most impressive".

In addition to big-hitting left-hander Miller, South Africa's squad also includes batting all-rounders JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis, with the pair having recovered from injury, while AB de Villiers continues as captain and wicketkeeper.

Duminy has been out for six months following ankle and Achilles injuries sustained against Australia.

The 2013 Champions Trophy, set to be the last ever staging of the tournament, will be hosted by England, with matches staged at the Oval, Cardiff and Edgbaston, which is the venue for the final on 23 June.

South Africa face India in the opening match of the tournament in Cardiff on 6 June.

Meanwhile, England have announced that they will name their squad at 10:30 BST on Friday.
