A century stand from middle-order pair Ben Harmison and Darren Stevens rescued Kent against Essex on a rain-affected day two at Chelmsford.
Resuming on 20-1, still 192 behind, the visitors lost their next three wickets for 23 runs.
Brendan Nash (5) and Mike Powell (1) were both dismissed for single figures as Reece Topley ended with 2-58.
But Harmison (55) and Stevens (91 no) staged a fightback as Kent closed on 214-5, two runs ahead.
