Captain Mark Wallace happy with Glamorgan strength in depth

Glamorgan's four-day captain Mark Wallace is pleased with his squad's strength in depth this season.

The Welsh county have only used 12 players in their five LV County Championship matches so far this season.

But 31-year-old Wallace insists he is happy that there is competition for team places at Glamorgan.

"We're very happy with the squad and there's a lot of competition for places here," Wallace told BBC Wales Sport.

"If you look back on successful seasons past it does tend to come down to a core group of players.

"As the season goes on I think that will certainly change. There's a lot of cricket to be played and cricket is becoming more and more of a squad sport.

"We've got a strong squad. I think you could alternate any number of different players into and out of the side.

"You would be very confident the guys coming in would come in with good form and really play well.

"We're lucky in that respect. We've got some good players not in the side, the likes of Gareth Rees, Chris Cooke, Will Owen and Simon Jones."

Glamorgan's hopes of securing their second County Championship win of the season were dashed on the final day of their Division Two match at Leicestershire.

Only 55 minutes of play was possible on the final day at Grace Road because of rain, with Glamorgan in control of the match.

And Wallace is convinced his bowlers would have led his team to victory against a Leicestershire side forced to follow on.

"We knew they'd come out fighting after not performing so well in their first innings," Wallace added.

"But we would have backed ourselves with time on our side to be able to whittle them out. We've got a very good bowling attack this season.

"It's disappointing the game hasn't been able to take its course. This is a game we deserved to win."

Glamorgan have a week's break before facing Somerset in the Yorkshire Bank 40 at Taunton on 2 June.
