Hampshire and Kent miss chances to win

Hampshire and Kent had to settle for a draw in their Division Two match after an exciting final day at Southampton.

The hosts raced to 207-3 declared to set Kent a target of 342 before reducing them to 62-4 at lunch.

But Daniel Bell-Drummond (66) and Darren Stevens (96) put on 144 for the fifth wicket to leave the visitors needing 157 to win.

Hampshire turned the game again as they reduced Kent to 250-8 before running out of time to secure victory.

"This was a superb advert for County Championship cricket. A brave decision from Kent to declare so far behind on first innings and credit to Hampshire for setting a target that both could be content with.

"Kent looked like getting there too when Darren Stevens and Daniel Bell-Drummond were going so well but, as so often in this match, the game entered a new phase.

"Hampshire fought back and eventually were denied their victory thanks to some stoic, solid defence from Callum Haggett and Adam Riley.

"Their performances were singled out by Kent skipper Geraint Jones for particular praise, who said 'they played with maturity beyond their years'."
