Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire: Rain halts Notts fightback

Nottinghamshire grabbed four wickets to reduce Derbyshire to 306-6, but rain meant just 17 overs of play on day two.

Derbyshire began on 245-2 but, after a delayed start, Andre Adams soon trapped Will Madsen (74) lbw to end his 165-run stand with Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Adams then removed Chanderpaul too for 87, before Harry Gurney bowled Will Durston three balls later.

Gurney had his third victim when Ben Slater was caught at mid on before the weather ended play an hour early.

After dominating day one, which was also rain-interrupted, Derbyshire's efforts to post a big first innings total were disrupted first by an hour's delay, and secondly by Nottinghamshire seamer Adams.

In his first game after six weeks out with a hamstring injury, Adams sent back Madsen before receiving a slice of luck when Chanderpaul dragged a fairly nondescript delivery onto his off stump.

Gurney then took centre stage, knocking Derbyshire captain Durston's middle stump out of the ground before tempting Slater to nick to slip where Paul Franks took a good low catch.

Two more hold-ups followed, before play was finally adjourned for the day.

"While there was not enough cricket to quench anyone's thirst, the sight of a fit Andre Adams gladdened the heart of most Notts supporters.

"Clearly up for the battle, the New Zealander looked close to his best as he nipped out both Wayne Madsen and Shivnarine Chanderpaul to alter the context of the match.

"Other than the action itself, the afternoon produced spectacular, torrential thunderstorms and unless both sides conspire to produce a last day run-chase, the game already looks to be heading for a draw."
