Alec Stewart: Surrey will learn from FLt20 finals day defeat

Alec Stewart hopes Surrey will learn from the experience of FLt20 finals day, despite finishing as runners-up.

The Oval outfit lost to Northamptonshire by 102 runs in the final at Edgbaston on Saturday.

He told BBC London 94.9: "You play cricket for the big finals days. In the future I'd like to thing we can go on to win it.

"Right up until the final we played some good, consistent cricket and had plans that were flexible."

He added: "I am proud of our dressing room. To get to the final is an achievement in itself, although we wanted to go the full way.

"We have some good, young players who are learning. Zafar Ansari, for example, showed what a clever and intelligent cricketer he is in the semi-final.

"We beat some good sides along the way including Hampshire in the semi-final."

Former England captain Stewart, who is overseeing first-team affairs following the departure of Chris Adams in June, admitted that they had been "thoroughly outplayed" by Northants in the final.

Half-centuries from David Willey, Cameron White and Alex Wakely helped Northants post 194-2 from their 18 overs in the rain-affected encounter in Birmingham.

Willey then took figures of 4-9, including a hat-trick, to help skittle Surrey out for 92 in reply.

"It's strange but when you get beaten like that you can almost accept it a bit easier," Stewart, 50, said. "We got smashed up.

"You have got to take your hats off to the way Northants played. They put us under pressure from ball one.

"When you have people who can bat like that and clear the boundary ropes you are always going to struggle.

"Unfortunately chasing 190-odd is always going to be hard work.

"It proved to be beyond us. They are worthy winners."
