Ireland finish Super50 series with win over Windward Islands

Ireland finished their Super50 campaign with a 64-run victory over the Windward Islands in Trinidad.

Niall O'Brien top-scored for the Irish with 44 as they were bowled out for a modest 179 from 48.3 overs.

However, an impressive bowling display including three wickets from George Dockrell saw the defending champions skittled out for just 115 in 35 overs.

Ireland, who lost their first two games, will play the West Indies in two T20 and one ODI games later this month.

Stuart Thompson chipped in with 32 as the Irish batted first and they looked to be course for a third defeat after posting just 179.

Young spinner Dockrell starred with 3-14 while Andrew Poynter conceded only 11 runs for his two wickets.

"We are happy, especially with the way the second half of that game went," said Ireland captain William Porterfield.

"I think in the first half we were still probably 40 short of where we should have been, but it wasn't an easy pitch to bat on, and we knew that was going to be the case.

"Anything over 200 we knew would be a very competitive total, and that proved to be the case with 180.

"And especially with the young attack we had out there. I'm not sure what the average age was, but it wasn't too high. And a lot of lads are playing their first, second or third games in this format for us.

"So that's the most pleasing thing for ourselves. The young lads went out there defending a small total, and stood up and took ten wickets."

Ireland lost by 114 runs against Guyana in their opener before suffering a six-wicket defeat by Jamaica.

The Irish are playing in the West Indies tournament as part of their preparations for the World Twenty20 which starts in Bangladesh next month.

Phil Simmons's side will face the West Indies in Twenty20 games in Jamaica on 19 and 21 February in addition to a one-day international on 23 February.
