England Lions 330 & 319-8 dec beat Sri Lanka A 171 & 311 by 167 runs

Captain Chris Woakes led the way with bat and ball as England Lions wrapped up a 167-run victory over Sri Lanka A.

The all-rounder's first-innings bowling figures of 4-45 were the best in the match and he top scored with 92 not out in the second innings in Pallekele.

Set 479 to win, Sri Lanka A's hopes effectively ended when Madawa Warnapura (108) fell to Liam Plunkett (3-51).

Varun Chopra, James Taylor, Moeen Ali and Scott Borthwick all made half-centuries in the match for England.

Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes, 24, was one of six players in the Lions side that have been capped at Test level for England.

Durham seamer Graham Onions returned match figures of 2-92, while Yorkshire wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow could only manage 0 and 19 in his two innings.

The second of England's three-match series against Sri Lanka A starts on 12 February in Kandy.
