Ben Stokes: England & Durham all-rounder has wrist surgery

England and Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes has had surgery on the fractured scaphoid bone in his right wrist which ruled him out of the World Twenty20.

Stokes punched a dressing-room locker in anger after he was out first ball in the final game of the recent Twenty20 series in the West Indies.

The 22-year-old's injury will be reviewed in six weeks' time.

England's first game of the summer is in less than two months - a one-day international in Scotland on 9 May.

After facing the Scots, England will meet Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 international and five one-dayers from 20 May, and two Tests in June.

Stokes had been one of the few positives to emerge from England's tour of Australia, but he then struggled in the Caribbean, managing only 13 runs in five innings.

Meanwhile, his England team-mate Joe Root is to see a specialist on Monday to assess the broken thumb he suffered in the Caribbean which prevented him from playing in the World Twenty20.

However, the batsman has ruled himself out of Yorkshire's opening County Championship Division One game against Somerset which begins on 13 April.
