Devon thrash Suffolk to reach MCCA Trophy semi-finals

Devon cruised into the semi-finals of the MCCA Knockout Trophy after an impressive 138-run win over Suffolk at Bury St Edmonds.

Rob Woodman top-scored with 115 and had a first-wicket partnership of 165 with Liam Lewis (74) as Devon reached 278-7.

Suffolk's Joe Ellis-Grewal took all seven wickets, taking 6-42 with the ball and running out Gary Chappell.

But Devon's bowlers blasted through the Suffolk innings, Josh Bess taking 3-20 as they were bowled out for 140.

Chappell, Trevor Anning and Somerset seamer Jamie Overton all took two wickets.

"We batted extremely well up front, put them under a lot of pressure and ended up getting 278, which in any knockout game is a pretty formidable total," Devon director of cricket Keith Donohue told BBC Sport.

"We set about their batting in a very aggressive and purposeful way and ended up running out very comfortable winners."

It is the latest big win for Devon, after beating Dorset inside two days in their first minor Counties Championship match last week and overcoming Wales by 50 runs in their last one-day group match.

"If we keep performing to that high standard that we have done in them last four games or so it's going to take a pretty good team to stop us," Donohue added.

"But you're only as good as your last game and we can celebrate our performance here today, but we'll have to put up again in the semi-final."
