Close, day two: Hampshire 286 & 264-2 Essex 121

Hampshire 5pts, Essex 3pts

Hampshire hold a 429-run lead over Essex following a very successful day for the hosts at the Rose Bowl.

Essex resumed day two on 55-2 but crumbled to 121 all out, with Kyle Abbott taking 5-44 and James Tomlinson finishing with 3-25.

After slipping to 24-2 in their second innings, Essex closed on 264-2 thanks mainly to a century from James Vince.

Will Smith (78 not out) and Vince (154 not out) have so far put on an unbroken 240-run third-wicket partnership.

Vince has scored a better than a run-a-ball, hitting 21 fours in over two-and-a-half hours at the crease, while Smith's innings has been more watchful, containing six fours from 153 balls.

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James:

"As this game unfolds it's becoming increasingly clear that the Hampshire bowling attack has out bowled their Essex counterparts.

"The one that stands head and shoulders above all others though is Kyle Abbott.

"His 5-44 included three quick wickets that initiated their collapse, losing eight wickets for 66 runs.

"James Vince merely turned the screw when Hampshire batted again. Their lead of 429 may already be far, far too many."

BBC Essex's Nick Gledhill:

"An astonishingly one-sided day in which Hampshire thoroughly underlined their promotion credentials.

"The key moment came in the seventh over as James Foster, on 36, drove Kyle Abbott loosely to backward point.

"The South African then dismissed Jesse Ryder and Ben Foakes in his next six deliveries and the rug had been pulled from under the Essex feet.

"Seven wickets fell in 10 overs but at least there was credit for Nick Browne in making a career-best 31.

"The Essex bowlers simply couldn't find the same seam movement and the visitors may have to bat for five sessions to save the game."
