Nottinghamshire: Mick Newell impressed by Wessels response

Riki Wessels smashed five sixes and five fours in his 48-ball knock as Notts beat Middlesex with more than 11 overs to spare.

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell was pleased that batsman Riki Wessels helped complete their highest successful run-chase in nearly 90 years at Trent Bridge.

Middlesex set a target of 385 in 86 overs and were beaten by six wickets.

Wessels (74 no) and James Taylor shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 103.

"The main thing for me is that a batsman that I've criticised for not finishing games off, finished the game off for us," said Newell.

"With Riki, I don't want to see him out at the end. He can score at a fair lick, be can also knock the ball around and play nicely as well."

Openers Alex Hales (94) and Phil Jacques (76) put on 156 with Michael Lumb adding 68 to put the hosts in contention on the final day.

And Notts captain Chris Read praised Wessels and Taylor (56 not out) for finishing the run-chase with authority.

Wessels smashed five sixes and five fours in his 57 balls at the crease as Notts won with more than 11 overs to spare.

"The way it was savagely finished off by Riki Wessels in particular, with James Taylor supporting, was clinical really," Read told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"The openers set it up beautifully. We got off to a better than good start, it was fantastic."
