Derbyshire v India: Tourists win by five wickets in final warm-up

Murali Vijay only made six in India's first innings but impressed with 41 in the second before retiring out

India completed a comfortable win over Derbyshire in their final warm-up game before the first Test against England begins at Trent Bridge next Wednesday.

India led by 15 runs after the first two days and by arrangement, both sides would face 45 overs on the final day.

Derbyshire made 156-3 from their 45 before declaring, with Billy Godleman hitting his second fifty of the game.

Set 142 to win, India cruised to a five-wicket victory thanks to Murali Vijay (41) and Ajinkya Rahane (39).

Although opener Shikhar Dhawan fell cheaply, Vijay and Rahane added 63 for the second wicket and by the time both batsmen had retired out to give others a chance, the tourists were well on the way to the win which they secured with eight-and-a-half overs to spare.

In a match featuring three declarations, and one which had lost its first-class status because of India's wish to utilise all of their touring squad, MS Dhoni's side will have been encouraged by a better second-innings bowling display from seamer Ishant Sharma, who had struggled with no-balls in last week's draw at Leicester and on the first day at Derby.

Sharma's seven overs cost just 10 runs, while only a late stand of 78 by Godleman (56 not out) and Alex Hughes (36 not out) doubled Derbyshire's score in their last 12 overs.

But it proved an easy run chase for India's batsmen as their first-innings heroes Cheteshwar Pujara and Stuart Binny took a rest and Gautam Gambhir, who had not batted on Wednesday, saw them home.
