Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell had only twice previously made 1,000 first-class runs in a season

Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell reached 1,000 County Championship runs for the season, before the Division Two leaders were pegged back by bottom of the table Leicestershire at New Road.

Mitchell went on to make 90 after sharing an opening stand of 163 with Richard Oliver (78).

But the home side then collapsed, Nathan Buck taking three wickets for one run in 11 balls.

Teenager Tom Kohler-Cadmore made 41 as Worcestershire closed on 317-9.

The home side's openers went to lunch unparted for the first time this season on 133-0.

But things began to turn sour not long after the resumption when Oliver, having made a second successive half century in only his second first-class match, was lbw attempting to sweep Jamie Sykes.

Mitchell was then out attempting to cut part-time spinner Daniel Redfern, before Buck's burst, coupled with another wicket for Redfern, which sent Worcestershire tumbling from 205-2 to 225-6.

Kohler-Cadmore restored some calm before Shaaiq Choudhry, helped by some lusty blows from Saeed Ajmal (20), steered his side to a third batting bonus point, making an unbeaten 40.

"If ever there was a topsy-turvy day this was it, with Worcestershire just after lunch thinking of 400 in the day, but Leicestershire's fightback leaving them to scrape past 300.

"Mitchell and Oliver were cruising but Buck's golden spell changed the whole days play and it was left to the likes of Kohler-Cadmore to get them past 300.

"One or two Worcestershire men will be looking at the way they got out, but credit to Leicestershire for the fightback.

"There is not much turn so far, but if it does start to go Ajmal will be looking to end his second spell at New Road with a flourish."

"At 163-0 Leicestershire were looking down the metaphorical barrel, but the Foxes' bowlers stuck at it and were rewarded throughout the afternoon and evening sessions.

"Buck's burst of three wickets for one run was a particularly impressive effort, with the young seamer getting the ball to move back into the batsmen at a good pace.

"Whether they have bowled themselves back into the game, however, remains to be seen. The odd delivery is already turning, and Ajmal will be a handful on day two, let alone day four.

"The general feeling is Worcestershire's score is about par, but Leicestershire will almost certainly have to build a first-innings lead to have a chance of forcing their first away win in almost four years."
