Close, day one: Sussex 314-7 v Warwickshire |
Sussex 3pts; Warwickshire 2pts |
Luke Wright's 89 and Craig Cachopa's Championship debut 84 helped Sussex into a strong position on day one against Warwickshire at Horsham.
The hosts elected to bat and reached lunch 99-1 - Luke Wells the only man to fall when he edged Rikki Clarke behind.
Chris Nash (58) hit his third first-class half-century of the term, before Wright and Cachopa added 174 together.
But Chris Woakes (2-74) and Keith Barker (3-57) got late breakthroughs as the hosts closed on 314-7.
It proved to be a fruitful first Championship innings for former New Zealand Under-19 captain Cachopa, who signed a two-year deal with Sussex last week after impressing during a trial period.
However, he was finally caught at second slip by Clarke off Woakes to start a flurry of late wickets, with Wright, Steffan Piolet and Chris Jordan all falling in the final six overs of the day.
Sussex's Craig Cachopa:
"It would have been fantastic to get a century but they have got a quality attack who kept coming at us and there is enough in the wicket to keep the bowlers interested.
"I really enjoyed batting with Luke. He is so calm out there and takes the pressure off you because he scores so quickly.
"We have batted together a few times in New Zealand and he is striking the ball really well at the moment."
