Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom Westley each hit a century as Essex pulled off an exciting four-wicket win over Yorkshire in a match featuring 581 runs.

Ten Doeschate was finally out for 119 - his highest score this season - while opener Westley hit the first 50-over century of his career of 111 not out.

The pair shared a fifth-wicket stand of 209 to take the visitors to the brink of victory.

Earlier Jack Leaning's 111 not out had taken Yorkshire to an imposing 290-6.

It was the first senior century of 20-year-old Leaning's career and followed 99 against Sussex in the Championship earlier this summer.

Andrew Lyth gave Yorkshire a quick start with a run-a-ball 38, after they had been put into bat, but his dismissal left the hosts on 55-3 and the run-rate then slowed up until Leaning was joined by Friday's match-winner Andrew Hodd.

The pair added 109 in just 13 overs before Hodd was out after hitting 42 from 39 balls, while Leaning batted for 139 minutes and faced 99 deliveries.

Essex slipped to 15-3 before 36 from 27 balls by New Zealand international Jesse Ryder gave them some momentum.

Ten Doeschate and Westley followed his lead and their stand transformed the contest.

Ten Doeschate faced 101 balls while Westley had received 127 by the close.

The other heroes of the day were the Yorkshire groundstaff, who prepared the pitch and outfield for a prompt start, even though the ground was under water on Sunday after it was hit by storms.

Essex head coach Paul Grayson said:

"At the halfway stage we were slightly disappointed that Yorkshire had reached 290, but it was a good pitch and we felt we just needed one or two batsmen to take some responsibility - and Westley and Ten Doeschate did so.

"I think we are well placed to make the quarter-finals but one more win should guarantee it."

"A partnership of 209 between Ryan Ten Doeschate and Tom Westley turned this game on its head and gave Essex a five wicket win at Scarborough.

"Yorkshire had posted a commendable 290-6 with Jack Leaning registering an 111 not out. He received able support from Gale, Lyth and Hodd.

"Essex were in distress at at 15-3, but with Ten Doeschate and and Westley both notching centuries they came into the game rapidly. The pair got on top of the Yorkshire attack with a series of sixes and fours and in although Ten Doeschate went for 119 towards the end, Essex strolled home by five wickets with 25 balls to spare."
