Glamorgan paceman Jim Allenby produced his best figures of the season of 5-56 as Essex were dismissed for 286 on day one in the Championship in Swansea.

Allenby captured the crucial wicket of opener Nick Browne for 73 and then mopped up the tail as the visitors failed to build on a good start.

Browne shared an opening stand of 79 with Tom Westley, who made 60 but Ryan ten Doeschate (46) was the only other batsman to pass 40.

Glamorgan reached 27-1 at the close.

They lost opener Will Bragg (11), who fell to the former England duo of wicketkeeper James Foster, who caught him, and spinner Monty Panesar.

Glamorgan wicketkeeper Mark Wallace enjoyed an impressive first day as he caught four Essex wickets in a row, including Browne.
