County Championship: Yorkshire start well against Lancashire

Title-chasing Yorkshire claimed maximum bowling points after dismissing Lancashire for 278 on the opening day of the Roses match at Old Trafford.

The home side were 0-2 as seamer Ryan Sidebottom (3-42) removed Paul Horton and Usman Khawaja in his opening over.

Luis Reece and Ashwell Prince (both 53) shared a stand of 96, and Tom Smith batted positively to top score with 57.

Jack Brooks and Adil Rashid also took three wickets for Yorkshire, who made 61-0 in reply by close of play.

Yorkshire began the match six points clear of Notts at the top of the table, while Lancashire, fighting relegation, had the same margin over second-from-bottom Durham, who have a game in hand.

The home side made the worst possible start as Sidebottom's second ball had Horton lbw and Khawaja edged the next to Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps.

Reece and Prince staved off the early crisis, but the latter needlessly surrendered his wicket when he attempted a reverse sweep to a ball from leg-spinner Rashid (3-77) and played on.

Steven Croft was dropped in the slips on five off Rich Pyrah and Reece brought up his fifty off 90 balls before lunch with a boundary off Sidebottom.

The left-armer gained his revenge two balls after the interval by having him lbw, and Croft followed in similar fashion for 38 as Brooks nipped one back off the seam.

Jack Leaning took a superb diving catch at cover to send Alex Davies on his way for 35 and give Pyrah a wicket and Lancashire's last four went down for 38 runs, including Smith, who was caught behind off Brooks (3-64) after hitting seven fours in his 98-ball innings.

Yorkshire had 19 overs to face before the close and Alex Lees (36) and Adam Lyth (25) saw them safely through to stumps.

Lancashire batsman Luis Reece:

"It was a bit of a tough day, 300 would have been a par score, so I think we're a little bit disappointed with our final total.

"We have to come back on the second day and get a couple of early wickets and get ourselves back in the game.

"We came back well after losing two wickets in the first over and it was a bit disappointing that we couldn't kick on after that.

"Ashwell Prince is brilliant to bat with and he played very positively to take the pressure off me."

Yorkshire pace bowler Jack Brooks:

"You could see Lancashire came out with a positive attitude to try and put us under pressure.

"We probably didn't get our lines and lengths right as a bowling unit, apart from Ryan Sidebottom, who was top drawer.

"I wasn't happy with myself for the way I bowled, it was far too erratic.

"But I knew that I had a spell in me where I could drag it back and have a three or four-wicket haul. Thankfully, I did."
