Durham v Nottinghamshire: 14 wickets tumble on first day

Shahzad has taken 17 wickets in eight matches so far this season

Fourteen wickets fell on day one between Durham and Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street.

Ajmal Shahzad (3-71) and Samit Patel (2-20) helped bowl Durham out for only 253, following a 62-run third-wicket partnership between Mark Stoneman (55) and Michael Richardson (73).

The away side were reduced to 3-2 as John Hastings dismissed Steven Mullaney and James Taylor without scoring.

Notts ended on 66-4 as Patel (26) fell to Paul Coughlin, trailing by 187 runs.

With three matches remaining for the away side, who are chasing their first Championship in four years, Shahzad reduced Durham to 34-2 early on as he bowled Keaton Jennings (11) and had Scott Borthwick (five) caught at point by Taylor.

Durham's 20-year-old debutant Peter Chase (two) was bowled by Jake Ball (2-48) and Gordon Muchall, who finished unbeaten on 37, was only the third player to pass 25 runs for the home team.

Relegation-threatened Durham rattled through Notts' top order and Taylor, who was called up to the England Twenty20 squad earlier in the day, fell for a first ball duck.

The home side will require further breakthroughs early on day two if they are to move out of the relegation places, as they trailed seventh-placed Lancashire by six points at the beginning of the day's play.

Durham batsman Michael Richardson:

"We let them back in to the game just before tea but with taking four wickets we have swung the match back in our favour.

"At times when it is sunny here it swings more then when it is overcast, against the general rule, and both teams put in the ball in good areas.

"One of the top six always likes to get a hundred but with none of us able to do that we only made a par score as opposed to being well ahead,"
