Warwickshire v Northants: Bears wrap up win at Edgbaston

Warwickshire completed victory over Northants by an innings and 16 runs at Edgbaston to move above Nottinghamshire and into second in the Championship.

Yorkshire secured the title on Friday morning, but the Bears moved 15 points ahead of Notts in the race for second place and £214,000 prize money.

Resuming on 149-5 on the final day, Ben Duckett (71) and Andrew Hall (31) briefly raised Northants' spirits.

But the visitors were dismissed for 284 before lunch as Keith Barker took 4-47.

It was an 11th defeat for Northants in 14 matches and their seventh by an innings.

Warwickshire, who won the T20 Blast last month and have also reached the One-Day Cup final, are now favourites to claim second place in the Championship.

Their victory was secured when Neil Wagner (18), who had hit a six and two fours, picked out Jonathan Trott at long-on off Barker, who finished with game with match figures of 8-108.

Warwickshire director of cricket Dougie Brown:

"To produce a disciplined performance all the way through was really pleasing.

"I know the title is not ours to chase down any more but we are still playing good cricket in second place and our goal remains making sure that we do finish in second place.

"We are out there in front and if we can play another solid game next time against Durham here, then hopefully second place is ours."

Northants head coach David Ripley:

"We do believe we have got some talented young players.

"Although Ben Duckett hasn't always found it easy in Division One, over the last two games he has looked every bit a Division One cricketer.

"There are good signs. He's improved a little bit on some of his technical work, he's worked hard on that and got the rewards. He's played very, very well."

"Warwickshire's momentum, steadily building over the last couple of months, now makes them favourites to finish runners-up to Yorkshire in the Championship, in addition to their limited-overs exploits.

"This match finished in fairly light-hearted fashion. After Ben Duckett had delayed the Bears with some crafted strokes, especially through the off-side, the lower order slogged merrily to the end.

"The fixtures have fallen favourably for the Bears, giving them a clear week to prepare for their Lord's final, before returning here for the final Championship match, also against Durham.

"If they win it they'll be assured of second place, though other results could confirm that even before then."

"But perhaps the younger batsmen in the squad can take inspiration from the composed and ruthless manner in which Sam Hain and Jonathan Trott picked apart Northants' shorthanded bowling attack to win this game.

"One meagre crumb of comfort is that Adam Rossington, James Kettleborough and the in-form Ben Duckett, who played excellently for his second fifty of the game, top the batting averages for the season. All three are aged below 22."
